As the cleanup hitter for one of the American League’s most talented young clubs, Albert Belle may finally get the attention his dynamite-packed stick deserves in 1993. With 34 taters and 112 RBI in 1992, Belle finished tied for fourth in both of the AL’s prime power stats last season, although it was the Fielders, Gonzalezes and McGwires that received all the headlines. In 1991, while playing in just 123 games, Belle popped 28 round-trippers and 95 RBI while sporting a .282 average. Although a pure fastball hitter, Belle is usually patient enough and has developed a good enough eye so that he can hit for average as well as power, making him a rarity in the baseball world. As the Indians’ younger stars, such as Reggie Jefferson, Paul Sorrento and Carlos Baerga continue to develop, pitchers won’t be able to pitch around Belle as much, giving the muscle-bound DH ample opportunity to continue to put up some prolific power numbers and establish himself as a true franchise-type player.
